Cambodia and Hong Kong agree to boost cooperation in health sector

Cambodia and Hong Kong have agreed to strengthen cooperation in healthcare and public health after a meeting in Phnom Penh that focused on skills training, technology, and long-term system improvement.

Cambodia and Hong Kong have reaffirmed plans to work more closely in the areas of healthcare and public health, following a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Health this week.

Health Minister Chheang Ra met with a delegation led by Leung Kwan Ho, Southeast Asia Regional Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), who was visiting Cambodia to explore cooperation opportunities in the health sector.

During the discussion, both sides talked about the current state of Cambodia’s healthcare system and where it is heading. They also shared ideas on practical areas for cooperation, such as training health workers, exchanging technical skills, sharing experience, using modern medical technology, and working together to respond to public health challenges.

The minister welcomed Hong Kong’s interest and said Cambodia remains focused on strengthening its national health system. He pointed to ongoing efforts to expand primary healthcare services in remote areas, improve management, and build stronger leadership among health professionals.

He added that these steps are important to improve service quality and move closer to universal health coverage, so more people can access affordable and reliable healthcare.

Representatives from the HKTDC shared how Hong Kong can support international partnerships, especially in connecting institutions, encouraging technical exchanges, and identifying new areas where both sides can work together.

The meeting was seen as a positive step toward deeper ties between Cambodia and Hong Kong in health and public health, supporting Cambodia’s long-term development goals.
